Skopje, Macedonia

Inn made of lead, an extraordinary work that shows great architectural skills. A shelter for the medieval travelers. Located in former Railroad Bazaar, today Kurshumli Inn stands near the Museum of Macedonia. Built in the 16th century, probably on the foundations of an older building. Some theories say it comes from the 6th century, the time of Justinian I. The structure consists of two squares connected to each other. The first is the central part, with a fountain and garden surrounded by the premises located on the ground floor. The upper floor is composed of 29 rooms that were designed to accommodate guests, while the ground floor was used as a storage for the goods. The second part of Kurshumli Inn functioned as stables. In its earlier days, this has also been a prison, but, nowadays, it complements the Archaeological Museum.
