The shield of Ohrid. Fortress, which was protecting the city from the invasion of the tribes during the great migration of people in the 5th century; fortress which saved the city from the invasion of the Gothic King Theodore in 479. When the city became the dwelling place of the Slavic king Samuel, he extended and enhanced it, with small changes and upgrades whose form is still preserved nowadays. Rising from a hill in Ohrid, this fortress can provide a stunning view of Lake Ohrid from its 18 towers and 4 gates; this impressive view from its walls is complemented with the beautiful landscape of the city itself. One of the gates opens a path that leads directly toward the lake. The fortress is at the heart of the beautiful old town, near the ancient theater and several medieval Orthodox churches.
